bullet  General Notes:

As part of the move from Dettenheim to Karlsdorf, a census was taken on April 12, 1812. For the Esswein family, it shows that in addition to the husband and wife, they had 3 daughters and 3 sons, which the church records here confirm. In 1811, the property census of Dettenheim reveals that Franz Joseph Esswein owned a 1 story house worth 400 fl. that was in good condition. There was also a barn with 2 stalls that was in fair condition, worth about 200 fl. The barn also had 4 pig stalls. He owned a shed that was in bad condition, and only worth 45 fl. His well was in fair condition, worth 15 fl. It was estimated that it would take 34 wagons to move the Esswein family. In Karlsdorf, he would receive 38 rods and 6 feet of land. Franz Joseph's occupation was that of a farmer.
M. Apollonia's godmother was Maria Apollonia Herrmann. She and Johann Adam Noe were married in 1826. Their wedding sponsors were Johann Jakob Bolz and Daniel Antoni, both of whom were not relatives. Adam Noe was a cooper by trade. It is unknown how many children they had.
Maria Magdalena's godmother was also Maria Apollonia Herrmann. She only lived to be four years old.
Eva Katherina's godmother was again Maria Apollonia Herrmann. When she married farmer Franz Heinrich Huber, their wedding sponsors were Johann George Huber (who certainly could have been a distant relative) and Johannes Gern. They had 4 children, only 2 of whom survived childhood.
Maria Elisabetha's godmother was Maria Apollonia Herrmann. She married Karl Philipp Koeffler, whose parents were Philipp Joseph Koeffler and Margaretha Nahm. Their marriage sponsors were Daniel Huber (not related) and Mathias Riffel (a brother-in-law to Karl). He was a farmer. After Elisabetha's death, he remarried Maria Eva Riffel (relationship unknown). She was still alive at the time of his death.
Johann Ludwig's godfather was Ludwig Herrmann, who is the husband of Maria Apollonia Herrmann. He married Katherina Weschenfelder, whose parents were Konrad Weschenfelder and Maria Eva Karcher. Their wedding sponsors were Franz Joseph Esswein (father of the groom) and Konrad Weschenfelder (father of the bride). Johann Ludwig and his wife and 6 others immigrated to Algeria in 1854. They must have returned to Karlsdorf a short time later, and then immigrated to Brazil in 1858.
Ludwig Herrmann and his family immigrated to Insel Krim in 1810, so the godfather of George Franz Esswein was George Franz Schlindwein. George Franz Esswein was married three times. His first wife was Maria Magdalena Koeffler. Her parents were George Melchior Koeffler and Catherina Elisabetha Hoerner. His godfather was also his wedding sponsor, along with the county gardner, Mr. Zahn. After Maria Magdalena died, he married Eva Margaretha Schlindwein, whose parents were George Heinrich Schlindwein and Katherina Fischer. By now, he worked as a farmer, as most people in Karlsdorf did. The wedding sponsors for this second marriage were Franz Mathias Schlindwein, and his brother Kilian Esswein. A few years after Eva Margaretha died, George Franz married Maria Sophia Weschenfelder. Her parents were Franz Adam Weschenfelder and Elisabetha Habitzreuther. The wedding sponsors for this marriage were his brother, Kilian Esswein, and George Joseph Esswein. The list of immigrants in the "Karlsdorfer Heimatsbuch" shows that George Franz Esswein, along with 3 other people, went to America in 1846. However, he must have returned to marry Sophia Weschenfelder.
In keeping with this family's tradition of using the same godparent for each child, George Franz Schlindwein was the godfather for Franz Anton Esswein. His first wife's name was Catherina Elisabetha Riffel, whose parents were George Melchior Riffel and Christina Schlindwein. Their wedding sponsors were George Franz Schlindwein (Franz Anton's godfather) and Mathias Riffel. In 1854, Franz and 4 other people immigrated to Algeria. However, he returned some time later. His wife Elisabetha died in 1869, and at the time, Franz was the forest-ranger. A few years later, he married Christina Weschenfelder, whose parents were Mathias Weschenfelder and Elisabetha Antoni. At the time of her death in 1872, Franz Anton was a farmer. On April 9, 1880, Franz Anton Esswein arrived at the Port of New York from Antwerp aboard the ship "Rhynland". He came to Buffalo, and lived at 93 Mulberry Street. He must have been homesick and sent for his niece Ottilia Hoerner to come over as well. They arrived in July of the same year.
The family broke with tradition and had a different godfather for Johann George Esswein. His godfather was Johann George Schlindwein. The child lived just under 2 months.
George Kilian Esswein was born in 1816, and his godfather was George Daniel Schlindwein. He was a farmer at the time he married Maria Theresia Schlindwein, whose parents were Peter Heinrich Schlindwein and Elisabetha Meizel.
There were three Weschenfelder girls that married three Esswein brothers. However, the girls were not sisters, since they each had different parents. Therefore, their closest relationship is first cousins. They were probably more distantly related, however, such as second or third cousins.
